2 Harh
On the 2nd day of the month of Harh, Sikhs commemorate the Shaheedi (martyrdom) of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Guru Arjan Dev Ji was the fifth of the ten Sikh Gurus and is revered for his profound contributions to Sikhism, including compiling the Adi Granth, the central scripture of Sikhism, and overseeing the construction of the Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s Shaheedi Day holds significant importance in Sikh tradition as it symbolizes his unwavering commitment to truth, justice, and equality, even in the face of persecution and adversity. In 1606, Guru Arjan Dev Ji was martyred under the orders of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir due to his refusal to compromise his principles and alter the sacred teachings of Sikhism.
On this day, Sikhs gather at gurdwaras Sikh Temples to meditate on the life and teachings of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, recite hymns, and listen to kirtan, or devotional singing.
The Shaheedi Day encourages Sikhs to imitate the qualities of selflessness, compassion, and fortitude in the face of hardship by serving as reminder of the sacrifices made by Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The Sikh community observes it as a somber day deserving of great regard and introspection.
