Who was the lady who performed the funeral rites of the martyrs of Chamkaur?

Bibi Harsharan Kaur was a resident of village Raipur Rani, about two kilometers from Chamkaur. Her husband, Bhai Pritam Singh, had also been martyred in the battle of Chamkaur. The Mughal rulers had issued a strict order that no one should dare to perform the last rites of the martyred Singhs. But Bibi Harsharan Kaur prayed to Guru Sahib and set off towards the Bleb Karan Garhi in the darkness of the night.

It was very difficult to find the bodies of the Singhs among the pile of Mughal corpses. Bibi Ji found the bodies of the elder Sahibzadas, the bodies of other martyred Singhs and collected wood for the cremation. She prepared a pyre with the pile of wood and started the cremation of the martyrs. When the flames started rising, the Mughal guards, who were sleeping at that time, were shocked to see this scene. When they reached Bibi Ji, they saw that Bibi Harsharan Kaur was reciting Kirtan Sohila.

The Mughal soldiers tried to resist them, but Bibi Ji resisted with her kirpan. Despite fighting very bravely, the Mughals seriously wounded Bibi Harsharan Kaur and threw her into the burning fire, killing her.

This martyrdom of Bibi Harsharan Kaur is truly an unparalleled example in Sikh history, which will always inspire us with devotion, courage and sacrifice for the Guru Ghar.
