Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, is revered with many titles such as Sarbans Dani (Savior of Humanity), Shah-e-Shahanshah (King of Kings), Dasmesh Pita (Tenth Father), Sant-Sipahi (Saint-Soldier), Kalgiyan Wala (Bearer of the Royal Plume), and Bajan Wala (Bearer of the Hawk). These names reflect his divine wisdom, courage, and spiritual leadership.
From childhood, Guru Ji was deeply loved and adored by his mother, Mata Nanaki Ji, and grandmother, Mata Gujri Ji. Born as Gobind Rai, he was a radiant and cheerful child, whose face always glowed with a divine light. Unlike other children, he rarely cried and was naturally playful and lively. As he grew older, he learned to walk, and Mata Gujri Ji would lovingly tie a turban on his head, a tradition that symbolized his royal and spiritual stature.
In Patna Sahib, where Guru Ji spent his early years, the Sikh sangat (community) was prosperous and devoted. Sikhs and devotees, especially women, would offer him toys, clothes, and ornaments as a mark of their love and respect. One day, a devoted Sikh woman presented Guru Ji with a beautiful, ornate kalgi (a royal plume). This kalgi was exquisitely crafted, adorned with precious stones and a lotus design. Mata Gujri Ji often attached this kalgi to Guru Ji’s turban, enhancing his majestic appearance.
Over time, Mata Nanaki Ji, Mata Gujri Ji, and other Sikh women began affectionately calling him “Kalgiyan Wala” (the one with the royal plume). This name became synonymous with Guru Gobind Singh Ji, symbolizing his regal and divine presence. From his childhood, the title “Kalgiyan Wala” became an integral part of his identity, reflecting the love and reverence his devotees had for him. This name continues to inspire millions, reminding us of Guru Ji’s unparalleled grace and spiritual sovereignty.
