Gurdwara Jyoti Saroop Sahib holds a deeply significant place in Sikh history. It is the sacred site where the last rites of Mata Gujri Ji and the younger Sahibzadas, Zorawar Singh Ji and Fateh Singh Ji, were performed. The tragic events leading to this began when Ganguram, a former cook of the Guru’s household, offered shelter to Mata Gujri Ji and the Sahibzadas. However, driven by greed, he attempted to steal from their belongings. When caught, he betrayed them by handing the Sahibzadas over to the mullahs.
The Sahibzadas were taken to Sirhind, where Wazir Khan tried to force them to abandon their faith and convert to Islam. Despite relentless threats and temptations, the young Sahibzadas remained unwavering in their devotion to Sikhism. Ultimately, they were martyred by being bricked alive.
Diwan Todarmal, a devoted follower of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, attempted to rescue the Sahibzadas, but it was too late—they had already attained martyrdom. Years later, Maharaj Karam Singh of Patiala, while rebuilding Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib, sought the rightful place for their last rites. During this search, the grave containing the ashes of the Sahibzadas was discovered. In 1843, a Gurdwara was constructed at this sacred site and named Jyoti Saroop, immortalizing the eternal light of their sacrifice and faith.
