Gurdwara Shri Shergarh Sahib holds a unique place in Sikh history and is deeply connected to the significance of Paonta Sahib. Paonta Sahib is a special city because it is the only town whose foundation stone was laid by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji himself. Gurdwara Shergarh Sahib commemorates a remarkable event from Guru Ji’s life, showcasing his bravery and divine power.
This Gurdwara is located in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, about 12 kilometers from Paonta Sahib. During one of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s visits to the Sirmaur region, he decided to meet with Raja Medani Prakash of Nahan and Raja Fateh Shah of Garhwal. While Guru Ji was in the area, a villager approached him with a plea for help. The villager explained that a man-eating tiger was terrorizing the local community, putting their lives in constant danger.
Moved by the villager’s distress, Guru Gobind Singh Ji took immediate action. With a single stroke of his sword, he beheaded the ferocious tiger, saving the villagers from further harm. This act of immense courage and divine strength left a lasting impression on the people. To honor this extraordinary event, Gurdwara Shri Shergarh Sahib was established.
Even today, the banyan tree under which Guru Ji stood while planning to confront the tiger can be seen at the Gurdwara. This tree stands as a living testament to Guru Ji’s bravery and his unwavering commitment to protecting the innocent.
